Interns
If you are looking for a challenge, an opportunity to serve, an experience of a lifetime, the Episcopal Urban Intern Program might be the place for you!
You may download the application form intern_common_app2008.pdf (130k pdf) If you are unable to download the application online, please contact the EUIP office and we can send you the forms by mail. Complete the application form and mail it to the Episcopal Urban Intern Program, 260 North Locust Street, Inglewood, CA 90301.
Application Deadline: February 15th (early deadline) and April 15th (final deadline).
Upon receipt of your completed application, EUIP will contact you to arrange for an interview. Most interviews are done by phone. Early applicants may be accepted immediately, deferred until the April round, or turned down. Intern commitment contracts are finalized early to mid-May.
Note on Common Application:
EUIP participates with similar Episcopal programs around the US in a common application. You can see the list of programs using this application here. Please note that EUIP does not require an original copy of your school transcripts.
Note to Foreign Applicants:
We have found that it is very difficult to come to the U.S. simply to do this program. If you already have a visa and/or feel confident that you can immigrate here for one year with a firm promise to return home after that year, then you might want to apply.
Work Sites
Take advantage of a great opportunity - employ a
highly qualified, deeply dedicated young adult through EUIP! An EUIP Intern will cost you
less money than a regular full-time employee with similar qualifications and skills. Barring
special circumstances, you are also assured of having the intern for a solid year. Since 1991
EUIP has been providing interns to various social service agencies in and around
Los Angeles.
Intern Profile
Interns are all college graduates, generally between the ages of 21-30. They represent
a variety of ethnic backgrounds, geographic regions of the United States, and nations of the
world. Many are bilingual and all share an interest in service to the community. More than 75
persons have completed the program since its inception in 1991. Graduates are currently working
or studying in such fields as teaching, social work, community development, ministry, psychology
and medicine.
Availability
Interns are expected to work 40 hours a week for one year and should be treated as regular
employees. These hours are somewhat flexible, but work sites should recognize that interns
have additional time commitments (e.g., common meals, worship time and community meetings)
that usually take place in the evenings and on Sundays. In general, interns are available
during the day, Monday through Friday. We recognize that evening hours may be necessary in
some jobs, but we ask that work sites consult with interns on their availability for particular
evenings.
The interns have four retreats throughout the year
(usually in November, January, April, and July), each of which requires that the intern
miss 2 1/2 days of work. These retreats are mandatory components of the program. Each work
site will be notified of the retreat dates during the work site orientation in the summer.
Interns will also remind their respective work supervisors two weeks before they go on
retreat so that supervisors can plan for the interns' absence. In addition, two weeks of
vacation is expected.
Supervision and Evaluation
Interns are not volunteers. They should be considered staff members and treated
accordingly. Interns need a clear understanding of job responsibilities and expectations.
At a minimum, this should include a job description and regular supervision. Moreover,
we suggest that work sites conduct mid-year (February) and end-of-year (August)
performance evaluations with interns.
AmeriCorps Participation
EUIP is affiliated with the Catholic Network of Volunteer Service/AmeriCorps
Education Awards Program (CNVS/AEAP). Interns assigned to secular service organizations
are eligible to receive a $4,725 education grant upon completion of the program to
help repay student loans or to pay for future educational expenses.
Although our AmeriCorps involvement should not change the intern's job description
in any shape or form, we do ask that the intern's supervisor honor our CNVS/AEAP
membership. This entails signing the intern's Member Contract, the Site Supervisor
Contract, the intern's hourly tracking tool, quarterly report and exit report. It also
means providing EUIP with information about your agency and a detailed intern job
description, which will be used to complete the Placement Site Description/Member
Position Description Form.
Transportation
Transportation is the responsibility of the intern, not the sponsoring work site. EUIP
has some cars for interns' use. Most interns have their own cars. All drivers are personally
insured.
Costs
In 2005-2006, each work site pays EUIP a total amount of $17,600 for each intern employed
for the year. Payments are made on a 10-month plan, beginning with September. The annual
cost may increase by 2-5% each year.
Please complete the agency application form EUIP-Worksite-App-2008.pdf (79k pdf) and answer the accompanying questions.
